Prebbleton Civil Defence

We are all responsible for civil defence, for protecting ourselves, our families, our neighbours and our property - until other help arrives. Civil defence relies heavily on local resources and local organisations, with backing from regional and national resources as needed.

There is no large full-time civil defence force standing by, so we need to rely on each other during an emergency event.

Civil Defence in the Selwyn District
Civil defence in the district is managed by the Selwyn District Council. Council resources, government departments, non-government organisations, community groups, trained volunteers and willing members of the public are all brought together by council's civil defence staff to support the community during a disaster.

ā€‹

Selwyn Gets Ready
The Council offers a free Civil Defence alerting system to residents called Selwyn Gets Ready, which sends text and email alerts to subscribed households in the event of an emergency. At the heart of the system is a sophisticated online database containing contact details of members and their needs and skills.

Following an earthquake, the system may be used to communicate important safety information and direct local residents with the requisite skills to assist other residents in time of need. This will be dependent on the state of communications networks at the time.

Community Volunteers

Within Selwyn Gets Ready and in a community, there are two types of volunteers. Community Response Team members and Road or Street Contacts. The Prebbleton area is divided into 7 sub-areas. Some Community Response Team members or Road Contacts can also act as sub-area contacts.

Community Response Teams

Across Selwyn, there are more than 30 Community Response Teams of volunteers ready to respond and support their local area in an emergency.

Based on information from Road Contacts, the Community Response Team will identify and prioritise who may need assistance in an emergency and who has skills or resources (like GPā€™s, Firefighters, first aid and paramedics etc) that could help local residents in need.

For Civil Defence, Prebbleton is managed by the Prebbleton Community Response Team.

Road or Street Contacts
In an emergency, Road or Street Contacts are responsible to check on residents in their road, or part of the road they live in. In Selwyn Gets Ready they can view details (address, phone number, skills, resources and needs) of residents in their road. In an emergency, they should first check on vulnerable residents followed by other residents. They would then report back the status of their road to the Community Response Team.

Currently, in Prebbleton only around 40% of our roads have Road Contacts.

Road Contacts provide an essential link to the Community Response Team. Without them, the Community Response Team is blind to the needs of approximately 250 residences in Prebbleton. Please sign up as a volunteer Road Contact to help your community.
