Councillors Comment - June 2023

Hello All,

We have had our first frost; winter is fast approaching. We have had a wet autumn; groundwater levels are already up and we are already experiencing areas of surface flooding. Please take extra care when out driving in wet, wintery conditions as the sun strike and slippery roads make driving conditions more hazardous.

District Policing.

The Selwyn area now has 24/7 policing, previously after-hours policing was by call-out only. Recently initiated changes have seen 5 extra police staff brought into the Selwyn area and we will see police on patrol 24/7. Our area has been a soft target for offenders who were aware that there wasn’t an overnight police presence. This is no longer the case and should result in a faster response when crimes are reported.

Roundabouts

The Shands/Trents and Shands/Hamptons roundabouts design, land acquisition, and consenting are progressing. Although there have been some delays, I’m hopeful the works will go out to tender soon, allowing for construction to proceed over the summer of 2023/24. In the meantime, please take extra care at the intersections as some drivers still fail to stop.

Springs Road Surface Issues

The seal on the section of Springs Rd between Tosswill Rd and Birchs Rd, outside the new Sommerset development, is overdue for replacement. This work is being held back until the construction on the site is advanced enough so that construction vehicles won't damage the new seal.

Kakaha Park

Stage 1B of our new park on Birchs Road is progressing; this includes the main car park, change rooms, building, service connections, pathways, lighting, and associated landscaping. The change rooms are awaiting code compliance and the works are expected to be finished by June. Football is already being played on the new fields.

Water mains

The water main replacement project is well underway with Blakes Road, Norris Street, and Charles Street complete. William Street is now temporarily closed so please be aware of the disruptions and be patient around the roadworks.

Matariki Celebrations

The Prebbleton Community Association is planning to hold a Matariki event on Friday the 14th of July. This event will run from 1 pm to 3.30 pm so put this date in your diary now and there will be more information closer to the day.
