GIANT PUMPKINS of PREBBLETON

Strange things were taking shape in gardens across Prebbleton this summer as Giant Pumpkin fever took hold.

In keeping with the villages' inclusive nature, young and old rose to the challenge of growing a whopper to take the prize for not only the biggest

but the quirkiest, prettiest, tiniest, and classic.

Local support was always close at hand from the sourcing of seed to the glossy certificates for the category winners thanks to Bakerprint.

The Seeds were distributed by the Prebbleton PTA and found homes with Prebbleton School children and home gardeners eager to test their skills.

The season for growing pumpkins is confined to the warmer months of late spring to late summer but the rapid growth rate takes you by surprise as you watch the development of a baseball-sized fruit to a 100kg whopper in under 3 months.

The presentation took place at the local market with a fantastic turnout

of over 25 pumpkins of all shapes and sizes.

The winner of the Giant or Whopper was steamrolled by a local good bugger

Hamish Prebble at 120 kg

who really entered into the swing of things complete with a pumpkin beanie on his head.

This year was so well received that big plans are afoot for an even larger event next year with possibly a family picnic day in the domain to accompany the weigh-in.
